Schönbrunn Zoo supports conservation projects for Red Pandas in Nepal. The Viennese zoo works together with the Red Panda Network.

One project focuses on new energy-efficient cooking stations for Nepalese herdsmen.

Protection of the forests

“Deforestation is one of the main problems. The herdsmen need a lot of wood for the traditional method of firemaking. With our support they get new energy-efficent cooking stations. This reduces the consumption of wood and the emission of smoke which is also harmful for the herdsmen”, says Dagmar Schratter, Director of Schönbrunn Zoo.

Support for eco-tourism

In addition, the zoo has also funded the training of five locals to become guides. This should support the eco-tourism in the region. The nature-guides will also assist the Red Panda Network in observing and counting the Red Pandas in the wild.
