Red Panda Tarrei has died aged 19 at the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin. According to the zoo, he was the second-oldest male Red Panda in managed care. In the wild, the animal’s life expectancy is approximately 8 to 14 years. Tarrei suffered from age-related diseases. A CT scan showed fluid buildup around the heart and lungs. To spare Tarrei further pain, he was euthanized.
Tarrei was born at Tohoku Safari Park in Nihonmatsu, Japan, and moved to Henry Vilas Zoo in 2015. He is survived by 13-year-old female Red Panda Tai.
