The Red Pandas at Zoo Schönbrunn in Vienna, Austria, have moved to a larger enclosure. At around 300 square meters, their new home, the former coati enclosure, offers twice as much space as their previous home. The move will also give the giant pandas more space, as the vacated area will be integrated into their enclosure.
Otters as roommates
Before the Red Pandas could move into their new home, it was adapted to their needs. Among other things, they now have a climbing frame as well as feeding and sleeping areas.
The animals will soon be sharing their new home with the Asian small-clawed otter from the zoo’s rainforest house. “We are creating another exciting communal enclosure that will offer the animals mutual enrichment and visitors a wide range of animal observations,” explains zoo director Dr. Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck.
