The zoo in Thoiry (France) mourns Madoaï. The female Red Panda – lovingly called “Grandma” by the zoo – was 17 years old, this July she would have celebrated her 18th birthday. According to the zoo, Madoaï was one of the “oldest representatives of her kind in a European zoo”. In nature, Red Pandas live for about 8 to 10 years.
Madoaï came to Thoiry in 2001 and provided several times for offspring, who today lives in zoos in Europe.
Red Panda couple Kara and Shifu now remain in the Thoiry Zoo.
